We service your auto battery and electrics issues

At Hamby's Automotive Inc in Cumming we understand that the charging and electrical systems are the most intricate and complex systems on your vehicle, particularly modern cars. Our highly trained technicians have access to the proper equipment to diagnose and repair any electrical issues that your car may be faced with. We have the mechanics and the tools to get the job done right the first time!

At one time, batteries were primarily used for starting the vehicle. However, these days batteries do a lot more than that. A bad cell or weak battery can cause many kinds of electronic malfunctions for a vehicle. Alternators no longer simply spin and generate power either. Typically, information is fed through the ECU and an array of sensors communicate with the alternator, telling it to switch on and off and how much power to provide.

The bottom line is, in a world of ever-increasing complexity concerning your vehicle’s electrical systems, our expert mechanics are now a necessity rather than a convenience. We can test, isolate, and repair any issue, big or small; from oil changes to complex wiring issues, your car is in good hands here at Hamby's Automotive Inc in Cumming.

At Hamby's Automotive Inc , our battery services include:

- Battery/Starter/Alternator Testing and Diagnostics
- Battery Recharging
- Battery Replacement
- Battery Maintenance (e.g cleaning corrosion)
- Alternator/Starter Replacement
- Alternator Belt
- Ignition Switch

Servicing Your Vehicle’s Electrical System

To diagnose issues with your vehicle’s electrical system, we use specialized equipment to tap into your vehicle’s computer system and locate the cause of the problem. For per maintenance. our team will do the following:

  • We will check your battery, and replace it if necessary, to ensure that your vehicle is receiving enough power.
  • We will check your vehicle’s electrical cable connections, and make adjustments if necessary.
  • We will perform engine diagnostics, if necessary, for more complex electrical problems and sophisticated vehicle computer systems.

Sometimes, the problem is as simple as a faulty battery. In other cases, the problem is more complex and requires the attention of an experienced automotive technician, like the ones you’ll find here at Hamby's Automotive Inc in Cumming.

Today’s cars are controlled by computers – from the alternator to the starter, air conditioning system, and virtually everything in between. Our technicians will ensure that we find and resolve the problem quickly, so you can get up and running.

Signs of Electrical System Problems

How can you tell if it’s your vehicle’s electrical system or some other component that needs repairs? It can be tricky to pinpoint an electrical problem, but there are some signs you should be on the lookout for:

  • Your vehicle won’t start, and when you turn the key, you hear nothing at all – no grinding or clicking noises.
  • Your vehicle is running just fine, but your headlights dim when you’re idling or driving slowly.
  • The dashboard or interior lights do not illuminate or are very dim.

If your vehicle’s electrical system needs servicing, talk to our professional mechanics at Hamby's Automotive Inc who will find and fix the problem quickly, so you can get back on the road.

Heating & Air Conditioning Facts & Information

Your vehicle’s HVAC system is important not only for comfort, but for defrosting and defogging windows, uninterrupted flow of engine coolant, and proper operation of belts which drive your alternator, power steering, and water pump. Heating and cooling issues come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the type of car or truck you drive and the make or model of that vehicle, but Hamby's Automotive Inc in Cumming, GA can handle them all.

Your heat and A/C system are complicated, to say the least, requiring the right tools, and constant training to keep up-to-date on the new information and diagnostic tools required to take care of your specific system.  Our technicians at Hamby's Automotive Inc have experience in all makes and models and can quickly find and solve any issue you might have with your heat and A/C system should it be due to an issue with your compressors, high-pressure lines, special gasses, condensers, actuators, electronic and vacuum signals, or multiple other aspects of your car or truck.  Your air conditioning system has to work in harmony to effectively cool your vehicle infrastructure and when needed heat the inside of your vehicle for your comfort.  The longer an A/C system remains broken the more problems it will develop, so it’s a good idea to have it serviced regularly.

We have found that the heating systems are generally far more reliable than A/C since they primarily operate on circulating engine coolant.  However, if you’re having heating issues, the consequences are usually far greater if neglected.  Lack of defrosting and defogging ability is not just inconvenient but also extremely unsafe.  A clogged heater core can cause engine overheating, and a failed heater core will leak coolant into your vehicle, damaging other components. If your heater is misbehaving, have it inspected immediately.  Often a simple coolant flush will correct the issue if we can catch it quickly.

When you bring your vehicle to the ASE certified automotive specialists of Hamby's Automotive Inc in Cumming for an HVAC check or a repair of your air conditioning, heating, and ventilation system, our highly trained technicians may perform any of the following services:

  • Air conditioning performance test
  • Radiator cooling fan and condenser check
  • Thorough inspection and repair and replacement of HVAC components due to leaks degraded seals and malfunctions including hoses, gaskets, and belts
  • System pressure checks, such as with hi and low-pressure hoses
  • Air conditioning recharge
  • Refrigerant refill
  • Replacement or cleaning of the cabin air filter
  • Condenser repair and replacement
  • Compressor repair and replacement
  • Evaporator repair and replacement
  • Accumulator/receiver-drier repair and replacement
  • Radiator repair and replacement
  • Thermostat repair and replacement
  • Water pump repair and replacement

Regular and preventative maintenance of your HVAC system will ensure you avoid many of the preventable extensive repairs that arise from failure to properly service and maintain your vehicle’s air conditioning, heating, and ventilation system. If you have noticed exterior or interior leaks, odd smells, or a failure to maintain cabin temperature, our technicians are qualified and prepared to quickly diagnose any HVAC issues in your vehicle and efficiently complete any necessary maintenance or repair services to have you back on the road as soon as possible.  Sometimes just rolling down the windows and living with the problem isn't the "simple solution" you think it is but the start of really causing major damage to your vehicle.

Our shop is here to save you money and keep you on the road going where you want - when you want, so if you have questions or issues with getting your service work done simply give us a call here at Hamby's Automotive Inc where we have you covered.  Whether your car, truck, or SUV needs a coolant flush, an A/C system flush or charge, actuator replacement, or any other sort of repair or maintenance we will ensure you drive in comfort again.

Typical Wear and Tear:  Factors that affect the replacement of cooling system parts include:

  • Driving habits
  • Operating conditions
  • Type of vehicle
  • Type of coolant
  • Frequency of regular maintenance such as coolant changes

Symptoms that you are having an issue with your engine cooling system include,

  • Overheating

JASPER® Marine Process

The JASPER® process is thorough and our technicians at Hamby's Automotive Inc can install your marine unite with confidence knowing the meticulous steps taken to remove all contaminants, inspect the unit and rebuild it to meet or exceed OEM standards.

THOROUGH CLEANING   Every Inboard and I/O engine is completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned to remove all contaminants that can result in premature wear to internal engine components resulting in early engine failure.

CRANKSHAFTS  Crankshafts are precision machined to exact tolerances with no odd size bearings or journals. Thrust surfaces are machined in a two-step process to provide precise surface finishes for smooth engine operation and reduced thrust bearing wear. Every journal is inspected and measured with critical accuracy. After machining, oil holes are chamfered to improve lubrication and every journal polished to a smooth finish for long bearing life. Crankshafts are thoroughly cleaned with special emphasis on flushing and brushing out oil passages to remove any contaminants.

CAMSHAFTS  Camshafts are inspected for wear, dimensional accuracy, and gauged for straightness. Camshaft lobes are carefully machined to correct specifications. Each shaft is Parco-Lubricated to improve lubricant adhesion, especially during break-in. Any camshaft not meeting JASPER's exact specifications is replaced.

CYLINDERS  Cylinders are bored and honed to exact specifications. Cylinder finish and size are closely monitored to industry surface finish standards as well as for accuracy and consistency. This assures smooth piston travel and engine performance. JASPER® guarantees no odd size cylinders. The block to head mating surface is closely inspected and resurfaced as required to provide the correct surface finish for today's gasket materials.

CONNECTING RODS  Connecting rods are machined and gauged to within a half a thousandth for improved operation, especially in today's engines. Rods are carefully machined to avoid taper and to the standard diameter of original equipment. All rods are checked for bend and twist to assure smooth operation.

HEADS  Heads are carefully inspected for cracks and flaws through procedures such as magnetic particle inspection. Every head is resurfaced to exact dimensional tolerances and the surface finish is carefully monitored for proper sealing with the block. Valve seats and guides are machined to exact specifications or replaced to assure correct valve alignment and seating for optimum engine performance.

ASSEMBLY  Every engine is precisely assembled by trained JASPER® builders. Attention to such details as a final wash of new and machined parts and pre-lubricated camshafts, pistons, and crankshaft journals assures a clean, smooth-running engine that performs to your expectations.

TESTING  JASPER live test every popular complete engine with recorded inspections of temperatures, oil pressure, vacuum, and compression. JASPER's testing is one of the many ways we assure your satisfaction.

JASPER® Marine Engine Difference:  Used vs. Rebuilt & Remanufactured:

USED:  Used marine engines are pulled directly from a boat that is being salvaged for its components and parts or from one that is no longer serviceable and will likely not return to the water. Used marine engines may not be so much as surface cleaned. These engines are not disassembled, internally cleaned, or inspected. Used or junkyard engines may have high hours, poor maintenance history, and even unseen damage – a failure waiting to happen.

REBUILT: Rebuilding is to recondition by cleaning, inspecting, and replacing the engine’s severely worn or broken parts. The engine’s serviceable parts are reused within the acceptable wear limits of the manufacturer. Rebuilt component quality can vary widely and many engines come with only a short-term warranty.

REMANUFACTURED: A remanufactured engine is machined and assembled as closely as possible to the measured standards of the original equipment manufacturer. All core material like the head(s) and block castings, crankshaft, camshaft, and rods, are carefully inspected, verified against original equipment measured specifications to assure correct dimensional tolerances, and precisely machined. Replacement parts for a remanufactured engine are new or requalified to meet exacting standards and tolerances. Remanufactured engines are tested for adherence to the measured standards and tolerances of the original production engine.

Outboard Motor Care Tips

Here at Hamby's Automotive Inc in Cumming, we treat every boat owner as if they are family and want to help you enjoy your marine unit for many years to come.  We know, that keeping your boat in top shape is crucial to keeping your boat in proper running order, so we wanted to share our top tips with you! Preventive boat motor maintenance facilitates safe boating and can keep your motor reliable for a long time. Here is a list of complete boat service and helpful tips for what you should do as general maintenance while using your boat throughout the year:

  • Flush out the engine. This doesn't just apply to saltwater adventures, but to freshwater outings as well.
  • Startup the engine and let the water pump do the rest (practice safe boating by remembering to stay clear of the prop and make sure no one tries to shift the motor into gear).
  • While flushing the motor, we will check the water pump to make sure it has good water flow. This enables us to check the health of your boat’s water pump.
  • After flushing the engine, disconnect the fuel line and allow the engine to burn all the fuel in the carburetor.  Once you've finished the flushing and run the engine out of fuel, be sure to turn off the key and, if you have a battery switch, turn it off.
  • Take the engine cowling off and check for fuel or water leaks. If you find leaks, consult your safe boating mechanic.
  • Wipe everything down and spray with an anti-corrosive like WD 40 or Quick-lube. We will also lubricate all the moving parts, such as the shift, throttle cables, carburetor valves, etc.
  • Replace the cowling and wipe it down.  Keep a canvas or plastic cover on the engine between trips. Always use fresh fuel. At the end of the season, boat motor maintenance should include draining your tanks and taking the fuel to the proper recycling authority.
  • Periodically check the fuel line for cracks and worn spots.
  • Make sure the fuel primer bulb is not cracked and is pliable.
  • Make sure the fuel-line fittings seat properly and don't leak.
  • Check the clamps on the fuel line for rust or corrosion.
  • Check the fuel tanks for damage and corrosion.
  • Check the tank vent to make sure it aspirates properly.
  • Check regularly for water in the fuel.

THOROUGH CLEANING
Every JASPER® reman transmission is thoroughly disassembled then cleaned to remove contaminants that result in premature wear to gears, bearings, shafts, and other precision components like the valve body. Transmission cleaning includes individual component hand washing. Parts are carefully inspected and bushing surfaces are polished to a micro finish for extended bushing life.

EXACT TOLERANCES
As transmission technology advances, the need to maintain exacting tolerances becomes increasingly important which they are very thorough and precise. The machining processes are critical to assure proper operating pressures and provide for a long service life from your JASPER® Remanufactured Transmission such as:

  • Case and valve body resurfacing along with profilometer inspection of the shaft finish that enables JASPER® to maintain exact standards and precise tolerances in all phases of transmission remanufacturing.
  • The front pump and gears are carefully gauged and, if exact tolerances are not met, machined to assure they meet their high standards and precise operation.
  • Updates to specific transmissions such as the 5R110 for which JASPER® installs a machine-in-place bushing in the pump housing to provide correct alignment between the pump housing and converter hub.

TORQUE CONVERTERS
Torque converters are cut open to allow for a thorough cleaning, accurate inspection, and the replacement of washers, spacers, springs, rollers, and a new or re-lined lock-up clutch piston as applicable. Turbine fins are inspected and retightened and welded on specific applications. Hubs are carefully inspected and replaced. Converters are pressure tested then dynamically balanced to eliminate vibration that could cause noise, leaks, or transmission damage.

VALVE BODIES
Valve bodies are disassembled, cleaned, and remanufactured by skilled technicians. All components of the valve body are inspected for wear and the valve body is resurfaced for correct mating and sealing with the transmission case.

VALVE BODY TESTING
Valve bodies are tested on an Answermatic test unit which simulates actual vehicle operation. Vehicle speed and driver demand are varied hydraulically. The Answermatic quickly locates cracks and imperfections and verifies accurate shift points.

TRANSMISSION PRE-INSPECTION
Transmission performance is pre-inspected at the assembly station to assure correct operation before additional assembly and testing is performed. Pressurized fluid and special fixtures are used to test circuit leakage.

NEW PARTS
JASPER® remanufactured transmissions receive a standard set of new and qualified parts. Their standard parts replacement assures smooth, consistent performance and long unit life. JASPER® remanufactured transmissions are assembled by skilled technicians many of whom are ASE Certified and who specialize in particular models or families.

DYNAMOMETER TESTING
Every JASPER® domestic automatic reman transmission is dynamometer tested with recorded inspections to shift patterns and shift pressures. A stall test, fluid leak test, lockup test (as applicable), and park tests are performed. Tests are made at varying RPM's and full and closed throttle positions.
